Whether you just need a refresher or are totally new: Flotilla 2-76′s instructors are not only just highly qualified Auxiliarists – they’re also members of the boating public themselves. Our classes also earn the participant their safe boating certificate. The following list is the courses being offered this upcoming year. About Boating Safely (ABS), recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. This course is a unique 8-hour study program covering the fundamentals of boating. Although this course is not as comprehensive as our BS&S or SS&S courses, it’s a great entry-level approach to safe boating. This course will earn you your boating education card. $65.00, $50.00 for families who take the course together. See dates below.

How to Read a Nautical Chart (HRNC), learn about types of charts, chart scales, symbols used, and information given. Be able to plot boat courses and bearings, determine direction and distance, and plot latitude and longitude. Weekend Navigator (WN), this is a comprehensive course designed for both experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators. The course is divided into two major parts designed to educate the boating enthusiast in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions. Topics include: Fundamentals of Waypoint Navigation; Navigation Tools; Planning and Navigating with GPS and Paper and Digital Charts; Avoiding Dangers; Double-Checking with Instruments; What to Do If the GPS Quits; Tides, Currents and Wind; Using Radar, Depth Sounder, Radio and Autopilot; and Adverse Conditions. Boating Skills and Seamanship

A comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and novice boater. Eight required and five elective modules include: Which boat is for you? The Weekend Navigator - February 2013

Flotilla Leadership Course

The Flotilla Leadership Course (FLC) is a 12 hour workshop designed to train the next generation of flotilla elected officers. The FLC is prerequisite to flotilla elected office, along with ICS-100 and NIMS-700. The course is broken into modules, each taught by an experienced Auxiliarist who have a vested interest in the topic of that module. Modules include: time management, conflict resolution, training new members, uniforms, and policy and procedures necessary for the successful administration of a flotilla. The course is taught over two 6 hour sessions held on one weekend.

Auxiliary Weather Specialty Course

The Auxiliary Weather Specialty Course, more commonly known as AUXWEA, is a course designed to educate the student in the basic principles of meteorology and weather observation. The course is difficult (usually considered the second most difficult of the AUXOP courses) since it involves some undergraduate level physics. The course is taught over a period of 8 three and a half hour sessions by instructors who have taken meteorology at the college level. Topics start off at the large scale level by discussing the laws of physics which control how the atmosphere moves, narrowing down as we go to the Coriolis effect, solar heating, fronts and zones, mesoscale phenomenon, then local weather, observation and short term (3-6 hours) forecasting. This course is taught on Sunday mornings.

Auxiliary Seamanship Specialty Course

The Auxiliary Seamanship Course is a course covering topics pertinent to the Auxiliary boat operator. A recommended course for aspirant and current boat crew, this course will give the student a basic level of competency regarding topics such as the Navigation Rules, boat nomenclature and construction, anchoring, and principles of boat handling. While this course does not replace on-the-water experience, it does provide background to make the student a better crewmember, coxswain, or boater.

Auxiliary Advanced Navigation Course

AUXACN, the Auxiliary Advanced Coastal Navigation Specialty course, prepares a member to become a genuine asset to the Flotilla's operations activities. The AUXACN course covers coastal navigation and embraces two basic concepts - location and direction - and three basic disciplines - dead reckoning, piloting and electronic navigation. This is considered the hardest course the Auxiliary has to offer. Please understand that you will have to spend at least twice as much time out of class doing homework and studying as you spend in class. This course is taught over 8 weeks on Saturday mornings from 0800-1130.

Good Mate - Fall 2012

Good Mate is a basic introduction to environmental protection. Produced by the Ocean Conservancy, it focuses on common causes of maritime pollution. It teaches the basics of the nautical environment, the connection between boating and the environment. It also focuses heavily on the impact that boating and marinas have on the environment. Centered on 6 types of pollution, it provides prevention advice, solutions to pollution, and explains what causes it. It is taught in one 3.5 hour session.

2014 BCQP Crew School

The Boat Crew Qualification Program (BCQP) Crew School is a comprehensive, multi-month program designed to train and qualify Auxiliarists as boat crew. The program has 3 components. 1. Land training - January through May. Here you learn the fundamentals of being boat crew as well as perform your land tasks. You will, by the end of crew school, have completed an 8 hour TCT workshop, passed ICS 100 and 700, earned BQ status, passed AUXSEA and AUXPAT, sat the operations workshop, and finished all of your land tasks. First Aid/CPR/AED will also be offered. 2. Underway training - Patrol season (mid-May through mid-October). This will be coordinated with Division 4 or local units if you prefer. Your mentors will lead you through a series of patrols and build up your underway skills. The underway tasks you practiced on land will be performed here. You will earn the rest of your sign offs. 3. Qualification Exam - when a student is done their tasks and has at least 2 patrols under their belt, they will sit their QE. The QE consists of an examiner administering an oral dockside exam, as well as a patrol where the trainee must perform all tasks to the satisfaction of the examiner.

Auxiliary Communications Specialty Course
